Advent Update

Happy New Liturgical Year!!! Unfortunately, we are not able to organize sung Vespers at St. Monica and St. Blaise this season.   With praying Vespers during Advent and Lent for the past 3 years, I’m going to miss coming together to chant the psalms, along with meditating on the O Antiphons in preparation for the birthContinue reading “Advent Update”

Not quite sure what this “Vespers” thing is all about?

Here is a little introductory video that you might find helpful.  It gives you an overview of the Liturgy of the Hours and where Vespers fits within the prayer.  If it still seems a bit foreign, just show up to one of the evenings and see how it goes.  Feel free to ask me questionsContinue reading “Not quite sure what this “Vespers” thing is all about?”

Magnificat Pronunciation

We introduced the Canticle of Mary in Latin this past Friday, which we will continue using for the remaining Lenten Vespers.  Although the melody will change each week, getting a handle on the pronunciation will make a world of difference.  Here is a wonderful video I came across to help with this endeavor: [Please note:Continue reading “Magnificat Pronunciation”

Friday after Ash Wednesday

Hello all, I’m looking forward to getting together this Friday for Vespers.  We have the preparation class at 6 pm in Mary’s room, and Vespers will begin in the Church shortly after the 7 pm Stations of the Cross has finished.  I will get all of the important stuff out of the way by 6:50,Continue reading “Friday after Ash Wednesday”

To sum up…

Thank you all for taking part in praying Vespers during this Advent season!  I just wanted to share a closing reflection, also taken from The Seven Bells of Bethlehem: Giving an overview of the Antiphon titles: “As Wisdom He is known to us through His teaching.  As Adonai (Lord), His personal identity is revealed asContinue reading “To sum up…”

Getting closer to Christmas!

Thank you all for taking part in praying Vespers these past few weeks!  It is wonderful to see some new faces and to share in this joyful preparation for the Nativity of Our Lord.  I just wanted to offer a few things before we conclude our time together this season:  If you are wondering whereContinue reading “Getting closer to Christmas!”

Just some helpful videos

Hi everyone! The First Sunday of Advent is coming up, so I wanted to share some videos to help you become familiar with parts that may be a little more difficult.  Please keep in mind: the purpose of Vespers is prayer – it is okay that we do not sound like a perfectly trained choir.Continue reading “Just some helpful videos”

Friday – Fourth Week of Lent

Hey everyone, There are a few adjustments we will make in order to better fit with the Living Stations.  The  preparation class is being moved to one of the classrooms on the bottom floor of Founders Hall so that we wont have to move in the middle of practice.  There will be signs to helpContinue reading “Friday – Fourth Week of Lent”

Friday in Lent – Eve of the Annunciation

Warning: we have a very exciting Friday Vespers this week! Not only is it “First Vespers for the Feast of the Annunciation” (the feast is on Saturday, so the Divine Office helps us to enter into the mystery of the holy day by preparing the night before), but we will also be praying Mary’s CanticleContinue reading “Friday in Lent – Eve of the Annunciation”

Friday in Lent – Week 2

Great job, once again, with Vespers last Friday!  I actually think the melodies and Psalms for this week are going to be a little easier than our prior experiences, so you will probably catch on quickly. This week, we will begin singing the Our Father in Latin instead of English.  Many of you are probablyContinue reading “Friday in Lent – Week 2”

Friday in Lent – Week 1

Hello all! Well done at last week’s Vespers service!  Everyone seems to have picked up on things pretty quickly. This week will be very similar, so if something didn’t quite sink in, you will have a second chance before we add a new challenge.  The parts that will change are the Psalms (we will beContinue reading “Friday in Lent – Week 1”
